Excess global pepper production affects prices

Excess pepper production globally is affecting prices in international and domestic market said sources.

Global prices may move upwards significantly if China becomes major importer of Vietnam pepper mean while also overall global production is affected or reduces.

Sources also said that global prices for quality pepper (machine cleaned) are now in the range of $3,000-3,250 per tonne (₹214/kg, which is equivalent to MG1 grade delivered at Kochi).

However Prices in the domestic market would take some time due to increased inflow of stock by Karnataka farmers.

Also import restrictions are in place domestic prices may improve.
